Events – Michaelmas 2024
Freshers’ tours – Wednesday 9 October
The tours showcased the Babbage lecture theatre where first- and second-year lectures take place; in Downing Site, the locations of the Department of Physiology, Development, and Neuroscience for physiology and neurobiology practicals, the Anatomy Building for dissections, and the Department of Biochemistry for biochemistry practicals; and the Chemistry lecture theatre for second year lectures. The tour has proven to be useful as it reduces confusion when navigating to and around these sites. This year we also ended the tour/day with lunch with both freshers and older years attending. This gave freshers the opportunity to ask any questions or concerns they may have before starting their university life, and to also allow them to befriend older years so they will have familiar faces while settling into university.
Welcome drinks – Friday 11 October
To kick off LSM events in the 2024-25 academic year, welcome drinks in the Parker Room in College, and catering kindly provided catering in the form of large amounts of snacks and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Fellows and students have the opportunity to catch up informally for a few hours in the evening. This is also a great chance for the first-year medical students to meet the Director of Studies and other fellows.
Meet the DoS quiz night – Friday 25 October
This is always one of the highlights of the year. With high fellow turnout, this event always attracts many students to attend. With a large group of 20-30 fellows, supervisors, and students, three groups are created which compete against each other in a much-anticipated quiz showdown. Traditionally this has involved a stiff rivalry between Prof. Howe and Prof. Smith, who have a great time battling it over the anagrams section with frequent reciprocal allegations of foul play. Other sections involve two truths, one lie, dingbats, trivia, personal statement questions, which always create a great atmosphere, and everyone gets a good laugh. The first years also appreciate the opportunity to get to know the fellows and older students under a more informal context.
Stukeley talks – Saturday 9 November
For the first time in a while, a joint venture between the LSM and the BioNatSci’s Oliver Rackham Society featured in this round of Stukeley talks. Firstly, Ken Li (4th year medical student) talked about the neurodevelopmental work on chick embryos carried out over the summer in Caltech. Then Callum Wolvers (3rd year medical student) talked about his work profiling sos proteins, and Alexia Galsworthy (3rd year Natural Scientist) talked about her experiences in UTrip Tokyo. This was a great success with good turnout from both medical students and Natural Scientists, of course with free pizza at the end to reward attendance.
